Fixed Term Lead Coating Engineer, reporting to Technical Manager based in Burnley.
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Responsible for:
The role holder is responsible for providing technical and quality support to customers, project sites, and internal departments for all CRCE project work related to coatings. The role holder leads coating-related technical delivery across assigned projects, ensuring compliance with client, regulatory, and internal standards. They provide day-to-day technical guidance and support to Junior Coating Engineers and Documentation Analysts. The role also supports consistency, continuous improvement, and effective project delivery across the coating discipline.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Remit & Responsibilities:
- Lead and coordinate Junior Coating Engineers and Documentation Analysts, managing coating-related technical scopes across assigned projects in line with the requirements and and timelines
- Prepare and review technical documentation, including Application Procedures, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), Coating Record Sheets, reports and final project documentation. Ensuring compliance with internal standards, client specifications and relevant national and international standards.
- Act as a key technical point of contact for clients and project Teams on assigned projects, providing clear and timely technical support
- Attend and support client and vendor meetings and inspections, and technical reviews.
- Provide technical support across all phases of the project, including Procedure Qualification Trials (PQTs), Pre-Production Trials (PPTs) and production activities, identifying issues and providing effective technical solutions.
- Monitor project execution and support the project teams where performance or technical issue arise
- Liaise with Project Teams and Site Management on the planning and execution of PQTs, PPTs, and other testing scopes.
- Coordinate with the Laboratory Testing Coordinator, third-party laboratories, and clients to ensure timely and compliant testing and reporting.
- Support the technical liaison with subcontractors and vendors, ensuring activities meet project Specification and standards
- Work closely with Engineering, service delivery and QHSE teams to resolve technical and quality issues affecting coating performance or delivery.
- Capture and apply lessons learned from projects to support continuous improvement and consistency across the coating discipline and assigned projects.
- Consider the commercial impacts of technical decisions and support project teams in identifying in managing risks, variations and change controls related to coating activities.
- Support quality control activities and ensure compliance with ISO standards, client specifications, and internal procedures including participation in audits and inspections.

REQUIREMENTS
Job Specific Education Required:
Essential:
- AMPP (formerly NACE) Level 2 Certification or ICorr Insulation Inspector Level 2 or equivalent
- Science-based qualification (A-Level or BTECH or equivalent) standard
Desirable:
- AMPP / NACE Level 3 Certification (or equivalent)
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering (Civil/Mechanical Materials) or Polymer Science
Work Experience Required:
Essential:
- Minimum 8- 10 years of experience in line pipe and field joint coating
- Understanding of ISO standards and testing methods related to Field Joint Coating
- Experience working within contractor and subcontractor frameworks
- Familiarity with engineering, quality, HSE, and operational processes
Desirable:
- Experience in managing or supervising small teams (1-4)
Skills & Knowledge Required:
Essential :
- Strong communication and client-facing skills
- Technical report writing including integrating data and visuals
- Sound understanding of coating materials and application techniques
- Knowledge of pipeline installation techniques and systems
- Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
- Effective time management and ability to manage multiple projects
- Commercial awareness
Desirable:
- IT proficiency and presentation capability
- Ability to review and challenge technical specifications
Requirement to travel:
Ad hoc travel will be required to support qualification work. Occasional site and supplier visits (domestic and international) may also be necessary.
COMMUNICATIONS REQUIREMENT
Internal Communications:
Regular interaction with CRCE Burnley colleagues and wider teams via Teams, phone, and in-person. Leading technical discussions and meetings as required.
External Communications:
Clients, subcontractors suppliers, and laboratories via meetings, reports, email, telephone and face-to-face discussions.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
This role may require a satisfactory criminal background check (e.g., Standard or Enhanced DBS check).
- May be required to pass a satisfactory criminal background check.
- Expected to comply with confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Must follow all industry-specific and client-related technical standards.
